Volcanoes!

Wow! Year 3 have been so busy making their fantastic volcanoes over the half term.

Take a look at all the amazing volcanoes in 3H. We hope you can see the hardwork we have put into creating these and the special attention we paid to the lables ‘crater’ ‘vent’ ‘magma chamber’ ‘lava’.

Mittens!

3H have been persevering so much in their DT learning this half term. Making mittens for Ivan has led to lots of conversations about the learning journey they have been on. We talked about how it can feel to begin a learning journey, especially when it is as challenging as sewing can be. We shared about times we had each felt like we had been in the pit. Then we worked together to work out which learning behaviours would be best to help ourselves be resourceful and work out of the pit. Collaboration, Imitation and Perseverance were the three we identified as the most helpful. Finally, we reflected on how it feels to use our learning behaviours to get out of the pit. Feeling proud of ourselves was definitely something we all wanted to feel at the end of this learning journey.

Take a look at our learning line below:

Here is a close up of them developing their running stitch technique:

“We did it!” “I feel proud of myself!”

Ice Palace

This half term we have LOVED reading Ice Palace by Robert Swindells.

Here’s what we have to say about it:

Ysabella – “My favourite part was when the owl came to Ivan and guided him.”

Luna- “In the story Ivan went through lots of challenges and didn’t give up because he wanted to find his brother.”

Daniel- “I liked it when Ivan saw Starjik for the first time.”

Olivia- “It was a good mystery.”

Wills- “Ice Palace makes you feel like you are inside the book.”

Country of the Month-Iceland

Year 3 thoroughly enjoy exploring countries of the world using their atlases. Take a look at them using what they know to work out what country it could be.

Once they have found it, we share facts about the countries culture, history and population. We are particularly interested in the volcanoes and aurora borealis that occur in Iceland, linking to our topic learning this half term. Here are a few interesting videos which help us to understand more about Iceland.

Maths Manipulatives

Year 3 are enjoying using practical resources to explore their multiplication and division unit. They used resources to show division of a 2 digit number by a 1 with remainders. They made squares out of 4 to show divided by 4, triangles to show 3 and pentagons to show 5.

Take a look at them working in pairs:

Exploring non-fiction books

This half term year 3 are writing a non-fiction report on an animal. We explored lots of different non-fictions books on a range of topics and by a variety of authors so that we can magpie some ideas for our own writing.

Here we are discussing the features like the title and subheading and spotting features like fronted adverbials.

Mutual Respect

“Mutual respect is when you are kind to someone and they might be kind and respect you back. That could be respecting other people in school like if someone is different to you they might want to play a different game to you so you could show respect by playing their game and then the next day teaching them your game.”

Here we are creating our silent debates
