This week 3H have been exploring pitch using chime bars.

This half term 3H are investigating rocks. For the first lesson we explored rocks in a pair and used a Venn diagram to compare them. We discussed vocabulary like rough, smooth, pitted, speckled, heavy, light, bumpy.

Our next lesson focussed on permeable and impermeable so we learnt what these words meant and then we experimented using water to discover which rocks were permeable or impermeable.

This afternoon we took advantage of the sunshine and explored outside. As part of our RE learning we’re looking at creation. We’ve kick started our topic by heading outside to collect parts of natural creation.

Then we got into groups to create a collaborative piece of natural artwork.

The finished pieces:

This week 3H have been exploring poetry. We’ve looked at the poem ‘Tell me a dragon’. Here they are performing the actions alongside the poem.
One of our art lessons was learning how to sketch a dragon. Take a look at some of our wonderful artwork.

For our next art lesson we created our own dragon! In writing, we explored adjectives we can use to describe the different aspects of a dragon like it’s talons, torso, wings and snout.
Look at some of our creative ideas:

Finally, we wrote our own riddle. We asked the question What Am I? and we wrote to give the reader clues about what type of dragon we have. Here are some of our wonderful examples:
This week has been wonderful! 3H have settled into class and into the routines so well. We have spent time getting to know each other, talking about their likes and interests and building relationships together. Take a look at some of the things we’ve been up to this week.
Collaborating and building relationships
We played a fun memory game where we had to use our collaboration skills to work together. They had to memorise a picture and take it turns to draw it from memory. Only one person could draw at a time and the others could talk to them to help them. Everyone had a turn drawing and the pictures were very good at the end. They demonstrated listening and collaborating well in their small groups.

We also played a game using picture cards where we reasoned why they’d linked the cards together in a particular order. They discussed this with their partner and used the language Agree, Build or Challenge to discuss different perspectives. There was lots of interesting discussions happening! They asked questions that they would like to know about their favourite picture and we all found out the answers together.

Reading
We got the chance to explore the new books in the book corner and read for pleasure.

This week we also read the book the Colour Monster. We discussed examples of when we had felt calm, happy, angry, sad and fearful. We discussed how feelings can change and explored how some of us may have felt nervous about being in Year 3 but after a day in class we now feel calm or excited. The children used their named lollipop sticks to identify how they felt at the end of their first day. After this we collected others experiences of these feelings asking one another ‘When have you felt excited?’ ‘When have you felt calm?’

Maths games
We became place value detectives where one partner wrote a 3 digit number and the other partner had to remember it and then make it out of place value counters. They were great at checking their working and correcting any mistakes.

We got upto a lot of other fun things and it has been a wonderful week getting to know 3H. We can’t wait for next week!

In Maths, 3H have been exploring 3D shapes. They’ve explored them in lots of different ways! From using multilink in maths lessons to making 3D shapes out of straws to using 3D nets to create their boxes for Charlie and the Chocolate factory.

3H had a lovely time exploring a synagogue as part of their Judaism topic. They were very impressed with the knowledge and questions that 3H had!

On Friday 3H enjoyed their Charlie and the Chocolate Factory day. They made the chocolate bars they designed, took part in a golden egg hunt around the school grounds, made a fruit kebab and used the chocolate fountain. It was a great day!
Look at these faces mesmerised by the chocolate fountain!

They ended the day by watching the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory film which was lovely as they’ve worked hard reading the book this half term.

This half term 3H have been reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. As part of this they have been designing their own healthier chocolate bar along with a logo and slogan. They’ve used nets of 3D shapes to create boxes and design them using their logo and slogan. Here they are proudly presenting their hard work.
These boxes will be used on Monday after their Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Day on Friday. The bars will stay in the fridge over the weekend and then they can use their boxes to transport their bars home.
